Paper Receipts Hold Their Ground: Billing Paper Market to Reach USD 1.46 Billion by 2034 as Retail and Logistics Expand

Billing Paper Market size and growth infographic

Every coffee bought, parcel dispatched and restaurant bill settled tends to end with the same small sound: the whirr of a printer pushing out a slip of paper. Despite years of talk about going paperless, that slip is still everywhere. Strategic Packaging Insights reports that the billing paper market was valued at USD 890.80 million in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 1.46 billion by 2034, growing at a CAGR of 5.6% from 2026 to 2034.

How Thermal Paper Prints Without Ink

Thermal billing paper is the most popular product type, and its appeal is simple. The paper carries a heat-sensitive coating that darkens where the print head warms it, so point-of-sale printers need no ink, toner or ribbon. That keeps machines small, fast and cheap to run. Carbonless paper, which transfers an image to a second sheet under pressure, remains useful for multi-part invoices and delivery slips. Concerns over certain colour developers used in thermal coatings have also pushed paper makers in several markets toward phenol-free formulations.

Retail, E-Commerce and Hospitality Keep Printers Busy

Retail growth, especially in emerging economies, is the primary driver. The rise of e-commerce and logistics adds demand for invoices, shipping labels and logistics slips, and the hospitality sector remains a steady user. Innovation in thermal and carbonless papers is improving efficiency and cost, while suppliers are developing eco-friendly, recyclable grades and offering custom-printed rolls that let retailers use the receipt as a branding space.

Billing paper sits alongside other everyday store tools that are being upgraded rather than replaced. Our coverage of the hand labeler market shows a similar pattern, with warehouses and online sellers keeping demand for printed labels strong.

Retail and POS Receipts Dominate

The retail sector is the largest end-use segment, and retail bills and POS receipts are the largest application areas. Direct sales form the largest sales channel, as large retailers and distributors buy rolls in volume straight from mills and converters. Thermal paper leads by product type thanks to the near-universal use of thermal printers at checkouts.

India and China Outpace Mature Markets

Asia Pacific is the fastest-growing region. At the country level, the report puts India’s growth at an 8% CAGR and China’s at 7%, well ahead of Brazil at 6%, Germany at 5% and the United States at 4%. The gap reflects where new stores, delivery networks and organised retail are still being built out, compared with mature markets where digital receipts are already common.

The Digital Receipt Question

The main restraint is the shift to digital invoicing and e-receipts. Some governments are encouraging digital transactions and less paper use, and environmental rules add further pressure. Even so, many shoppers still ask for a printed proof of purchase, and paper slips remain essential for returns, warranties and offline settings, which helps explain why the market continues to grow at a steady pace.

Specialty Paper Makers at the Core

Companies profiled include Koehler Paper, Mitsubishi Paper Mills, Appvion, Hansol Paper, Ricoh, Oji Holdings and Lecta. The report also mentions Jujo Thermal, Kanzaki Specialty Papers and Domtar. Most are specialty paper producers with deep coating know-how, which is the main technical edge in thermal grades.

Outlook: Fewer Slips Per Shopper, More Shoppers Overall

Billing paper is a quiet but resilient market. Digital receipts will keep eating into use in mature economies, but rising retail and logistics activity in Asia and Latin America should more than make up for it. Suppliers that offer safer coatings, recyclable grades and branded rolls are best placed to grow through 2034.
